Second and third nose job procedures should be considered very carefully before being executed.  When a patient is requesting a second or third rhinoplasty procedure it will most often be to repair any problems with the previous rhinoplasty or hide scars and marks that were left as a result of a previous procedure.

Revision Rhinoplasty – What to Consider

There are certain factors that need to be taken into consideration and these factors will guide the outcome of the revision rhinoplasty.  The first factor that needs to be addressed is the look of the nose.  What do you as the patient want to change about the look of your nose?  The second factor is the problem that needs to be addressed and repaired.  You surgeon needs to know exactly what the problems are so that he can address them correctly.  Next you need to consider how much scarring you have from previous procedures.  Is the scar tissue going to affect the next procedure and if it is, how it can be avoided.

A very important consideration is the mental health of the patient.  The surgeon needs to make sure that the patient is not just a surgery junkie who is never satisfied with the outcome.  Some people are perfectionists and no outcome is going to satisfy them.  The surgeons need to make sure that the patient is psychologically balanced and has realistic expectations when it comes to the surgery.  The patient and the surgeon also need to ensure that the problem is fixable.  There is no point in doing additional surgeries if the problem cannot be fixed.

Some patients request a second or third rhinoplasty from the same surgeon that performed the first surgery.  Other patients may request the services of a revision rhinoplasty specialist.  A specialist in revision rhinoplasty is well-trained in these procedures and he/she should be able to answer any pertinent questions about the surgery that you may have.  In most instances, most noses can be repaired but it is important to analyse the problems and get down to what motivates the patient to have second and third procedures.  In short, surgeons need to make sure the motivations behind the multiple surgeries are founded and are not just a tactic used to undergo additional and unnecessary surgery.

Additional Info on Revision Rhinoplasty

According to statistics, 17% of all rhinoplasty procedures need to be revised.  With the majority of the revisions, only small irregularities are noted and these can be fixed with an outpatient procedure at a very small cost.  It is very rarely that extensive revision is needed.  When extensive revision is needed it is due to something that went badly awry during the primary rhinoplasty.  Revision rhinoplasty is also sometimes done to repair damage that has been caused by the patient during the healing process.  If a patient falls or bumps his/her nose during healing, second and third rhinoplasty procedures are often performed to repair the damage.

Second and third nose job procedures are often done on patients that want their nose to look a certain way.  They may bring in a picture of a celebrity and ask for that exact nose.  While the surgeon might try and explain that their nose cannot be made to look exactly like that, some patients persevere and go ahead with the surgery.  Obviously, after the rhinoplasty they will not be happy since their nose does not look exactly like the celebrity’s nose.  In most cases, the new nose does not look good on them and they then want revision rhinoplasty.  In these cases, once the surgeon revises the nose back to its normal shape the patient is satisfied.

In many instances, revision rhinoplasty is through no fault of the surgeon.  Patients have an expectation and when the results and the expectations do not align, they request revision rhinoplasty.  A lot of people are shocked with the appearance of their new nose and it may take some time for them to adjust and accept the results of the surgery.  In a lot of cases, patients are continually unhappy with the result of rhinoplasty and after multiple surgeries are left with nothing for the surgeons to work with.  This is a big problem with revision rhinoplasty and surgeons need to make sure that the patient is not just seeking out surgery which can be potentially harmful.
